Importance of Natural Resources

The environmental benefits of GMOs

From the perspective of our farm in Illinois,
we have definitely seen our ability to ‘do more with less’ increase. Let me explain: so, for example, we have corn
hybrids that can fight off insects all by themselves. That means that we don’t have to be in the
fields spraying insecticide. We’ve reduced our pesticide usage and, because
we’re not in the fields as much, we’re also reducing our fuel usage on the farm. This translates then to better soil quality. Our soil fertility is better. The soil is staying where it needs to be. We have higher organic matter there and the
nutrients and minerals are staying put. That then leads to better water quality as
well. And we’ve been able to use other conservation
methods and techniques on our farm, too. So, better stewards of the environment.
