Sediment reuse saving ecosystem on Unity Island


CHRISTY: A MAJOR PROJECT IS HEADING INTO ITS SECOND PHASE ON UNITY ISLAND. THE U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS IS TURNING SEDIMENT FROM THE BUFFALO RIVER INTO A NATURAL HABITAT ON UNITY ISLAND. THE SEDIMENT WOULD NORMALLY BE CONSIDERED WASTE, BUT IS INSTEAD IT WORKING TO REVERSE A DEGRADING AT THE SYSTEM ON THE ISLAND. — ECOSYSTEM ON THE ISLAND. REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE CORE COPY SYMBOLIC RIBBON ON THE OVERALL PROJECT’S SECOND PHASE. THE CORPS WILL USE A 50,000 CUBIC YARDS OF CLEAN SEDIMENT FROM THE BUFFALO RIVER TO RAISE THE RIVERBED OF ONE OF THREE PONDS THAT MAKE UP THE MAN-MADE ECOSYSTEM ON UNITY ISLAND. IT ALSO INCLUDES CREATING AN OPENING IN THE EXISTING DYKE THAT SEPARATES THE POND FROM THE RIVER. THE OVERALL PROJECT STARTED IN THE LATE 1990’S TO STOP THE SPREAD OF INVASIVE SPECIES IN THE UPPER NIAGARA RIVER. THIS GROUP — GREW FROM THE COMMUNITY, NOT FROM WASHINGTON. WHEN WE LOOK AT THE TRADITION OF THE AMERICAN ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT, IT IS A DIRECT RESULT OF ABSUSE EXACTED ON HER WATERWAYS. THIS IS TAKING MATERIAL NORMALLY DUMPED TO DO SOMETHING BENEFICIAL. REPORTER: ABOUT $100 MILLION HAS BEEN SPENT TO CLEAN UP THE BUFFALO RIVER, WHICH INCLUDES REMOVING TRUCKLOADS OF CONTAMINATED SEDIMENTS. IT WAS TAKEN TO A DUMPSITE THAT ACCEPTS HAZARDOUS WASTE.
